USS New Orleans Fire Extinguished Near Okinawa; 2 Injured

A fire that broke out aboard the amphibious transport dock USS New Orleans (LPD-18) while moored off Okinawa has been fully extinguished after a 12-hour response, the U.S. 7th Fleet confirmed.

The incident began around 5 p.m. local time on August 20 while the ship was anchored near White Beach in Uruma, Okinawa. Damage control teams from the New Orleans fought the blaze with assistance from the USS San Diego, the Japan Coast Guard, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The fire was declared out by approximately 4 a.m. the following morning.


Two sailors sustained minor injuries and received treatment on board. No Marines were embarked at the time of the fire, officials added. The Navy is currently investigating the cause and assessing the extent of the damage.
