A China Coast Guard (CCG) patrol vessel collided with a Chinese warship on August 11 while chasing a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ship near Scarborough Shoal in the West Philippine Sea.
According to PCG spokesperson Jay Tarriela, CCG vessel 3104 attempted a high-speed maneuver from the starboard quarter of BRP Suluan, striking PLA Navy ship 164 and damaging its forward deck. The incident occurred about 10.5 nautical miles east of the shoal during a PCG mission delivering fuel and supplies to Filipino fishermen.
PCG footage shows the two Chinese vessels crashing, with 3104 sustaining heavy damage. Despite the confrontation, PCG offered medical aid and assistance, which China did not acknowledge. Scarborough Shoal lies within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone but has been under Chinese control since 2012.
