Italian energy company Eni, in collaboration with China’s Wison New Energies, has completed the construction and commissioned the Nguya floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit, now poised to join the Congo LNG project as part of its second expansion phase. At 376 m long and 60 m wide, the vessel was rapidly developed—designed, built, and set for sail in just 33 months, establishing a record in sector speed-to-market. Equipped with next-generation technologies aimed at minimizing carbon footprint, Nguya boasts a liquefaction capacity of 2.4 MTPA and storage capabilities of 180,000 m³ of LNG plus 45,000 m³ of LPG, and is designed to process gas from multiple fields—underscoring its versatility. In tandem, Eni has refurbished a floating production and compression (FPC) unit—formerly the Scarabeo 5 drilling rig—which will facilitate the transfer of processed gas to Nguya. Subsea infrastructure development remains on schedule, enabling mooring and startup by late 2025. Once online, Nguya will join the first FLNG, Tango (0.6 MTPA, operational since December 2023 with 12 cargoes exported), bringing total project capacity to around 3 MTPA. Eni’s long-standing presence in the Republic of Congo—exceeding 55 years—further emphasizes its pivotal role in the nation’s energy development, including domestic power generation and community welfare initiatives.
