A container fire broke out aboard the Marie Maersk, one of Maersk’s Triple-E class ultra-large container vessels (19,076 TEU), on August 13, 2025.
The ship was en route from Rotterdam to Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia, when smoke was detected from a container stack while sailing off the coast of Liberia, West Africa. The crew responded swiftly with onboard fire suppression systems. All personnel are confirmed safe, and the ship’s propulsion, steering, and navigation systems remain operational.
The vessel diverted toward the African coast to facilitate faster assistance. Firefighting tugboats have arrived on site, and the nearby Maersk Savannah is on standby for further support.
The full extent of the fire’s impact on cargo and the vessel is still under investigation.
