A 28-year-old cargo ship captain has been arrested following a collision with a yacht off Japan’s Kyushu coast on August 13, which left one man dead. According to the Oita Coast Guard, the gravel carrier Sadamaru No. 38 struck the yacht in Tsukumi Bay around 8:15 a.m. local time.
Rescue teams deployed six patrol vessels and an aircraft but found only the body of Dr. Makoto Yamamoto, 70, who was confirmed to have been alone on board. Poor visibility was reported at the time, but authorities suspect the cargo vessel did not slow or take adequate safety measures. The 492-ton, 65-meter vessel remains under investigation.
