Pennsylvania Regulators To Cite XTO Energy For Fracking Fluid Spill



Pennsylvania regulators say they plan to issue a notice of violation citing XTO Energy for a natural gas drilling-fluid spill that polluted a stream last week.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, or DEP, said Monday that it is continuing to investigate an estimated 13,000-gallon hydraulic fracturing fluid spill at an XTO Energy natural gas well in Penn Township, in the northeast part of the state. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, fluid is a mix of water, sand and chemicals, that is pumped at high pressure to break up shale rock formations deep underground and access the gas held within.
