Wood Group Kenny Awarded Amberjack Jack/St. Malo Oil Export Pipeline Detailed Design

Wood Group's J P Kenny has been awarded a contract to perform detailed design for Amberjack Pipeline Company LLC's  Jack/St. Malo deepwater oil export pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico. Amberjack Pipeline Company LLC is a joint venture between Chevron Pipe Line Company and Shell Pipeline Company LP. Chevron Pipe Line Company will construct and operate this pipeline for Amberjack. The one-year contract follows J P Kenny's successful completion of the front-end engineering and design for the project.
The approximately 136-mile 24-inch pipeline will originate in a water depth of  2,100 metres (7,000 feet). It will start at the Chevron U.S.A. Inc.-operated Jack/St. Malo hub production facility in Walker Ridge Block 718, approximately 280 miles south of New Orleans, and connect to the Shell Boxer "A" fixed platform at Green Canyon Block 19.
The design must allow for technical challenges that include routing of the pipeline to minimize spans, design for pre- and post-installation vortex-induced vibration and stress spans, collapse testing of the pipe to verify wall thickness design, and installation of in-line valves and sleds.
J P Kenny's sister companies, MCS Kenny, MSi Kenny and Wood Group Integrity Management (WGIM), will support the project, providing subsea span analysis, flow assurance and materials engineering, respectively.
"We are extremely pleased to continue our support of Amberjack as owner and Chevron Pipe Line Company as operator of the Jack/St. Malo pipeline project," said Steve Wayman, Wood Group Kenny chief executive officer. "The full experience and demonstrated capabilities of the Wood Group Kenny organization will enable the project to safely and effectively support the future production from the Jack/St. Malo hub production facility."

Hapag-Lloyd is First to Deploy Stratos' New FBBPlus Managed Broadband Service

Stratos Global, the leading global provider of advanced mobile and fixed-site remote communications solutions, today announced the commercial availability of FBBPlus, its managed global broadband service for the maritime industry.

Stratos’ innovative FBBPlus solution offers shipping companies a highly flexible migration path toward Inmarsat’s Global Xpress 50Mbps services, which is expected to be commercially available in 2014.

FBBPlus combines Inmarsat’s popular FleetBroadband satellite communications service with Ku-band VSAT service. For a flat monthly fee, FBBPlus offers a managed data communications capability of up to 25 GB per month.

The turnkey service offering, predictable cost, and high data allowance make FBBPlus ideally suited for global shipping companies that are customizing their own network environment and require greater throughputs and bandwidth.

Stratos recently began deploying FBBPlus on approximately 40 vessels for Hapag-Lloyd, under a five-year contract. Hapag-Lloyd, based in Hamburg, is one of the world’s largest shipping companies and is recognized as having developed one of the shipping industry’s most advanced IT systems.

For Hapag-Lloyd, Stratos is fully integrating FBBPlus with AmosConnect – Stratos’ sophisticated maritime communications application – to manage all email, fax, SMS and interoffice communications. Also, The Stratos Advantage suite of value-added services will help Hapag-Lloyd attain the highest possible FBBPlus performance, security and cost control.

The FBBPlus service successfully meets the increasing data requirements of shipping companies. It offers the highly reliable FleetBroadband service with the capability and capacity of Ku-band VSAT within high-density shipping areas.

FBBPlus is the only service that delivers a managed MPLS extension network over separate L-band and Ku-band networks, delivering resilient and redundant paths. The MPLS network separates and logically manages business, crew and non-essential traffic – while delivering high-quality voice communications via the highly efficient Inmarsat circuit-switched network.

“Hapag-Lloyd is impressed by our ability to offer a flexible, fully managed broadband service. Because FBBPlus is based on FleetBroadband, Hapag-Lloyd is confident that it will help them meet their business goals and provide their ships with optimal performance and reliability at all times,” said Stratos President and CEO Jim Parm.

Parm concluded, “As the world’s leading FleetBroadband distributor, we understand the demand for higher volumes of data to support critical applications and business communications onboard – along with the increasing need to support crew with Internet-based services. Our creative FBBPlus solution demonstrates that we are perfectly positioned to expand our customers’ communications capabilities as we prepare for the availability Inmarsat’s Global Xpress services.”

The world’s largest semi-submersible heavy transportation vessel to be DNV-classed

DNV has secured a contract to class the world’s largest semi-submersible heavy transportation vessel (SSHTV) of Dockwise in Netherlands from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Korea.

The vessel is specially designed to transport more than 110,000 tons of offshore oil and gas production facilities including FPSO units. FPSO units are usually transported by two or three tug boats from shipyards to operating sites, taking about months to mobilize on the sites. This super-heavy transportation vessel can halve the delivery time, helping move up the installation and commissioning time.
The vessel is scheduled to be handed over during the last quarter of 2012 and upon completion, it will be the world’s largest super semi-submersible vessel
Wwith an overall deck size of 275 x 70 m, and a revolutionary bowless design, the new vessel will haveand a carrying capacity of more than 110,000 t.
The new vessel has been categorised a Type 0  to reflect its exceptional size. Hitherto, the largest class of vessel has been Type 1 with cargo capabilities between 41,000 and 73,000 t and of which Dockwise, as only provider in the market, already has two in service.  It will be the first of its kind in service in the maritime transport industry, and will add a unique capability to the Dockwise fleet, maintaining its leadership position at the top of the market.
Key Factors
The specification of the T-0 is subject to further detailed design engineering, as Dockwise consults with clients and HHI offshore division engaged in fabricating the next generation of modular units. HHI’s flexibility in new build design, together with its track record of on-schedule delivery and budget discipline, were key deciding factors in the award of the contract. The total cost of the vessel including all project and design costs, is expected to be approximately USD 240 million, with installments of approximately 45% in 2011 and 55% in 2012. The investment is fully financed by the successful rights issue and revolver debt facility Dockwise completed end 2010.

“This will be a great opportunity for DNV to show our competence in the special ship market and strengthen the role of class as the leading classification society. This ship will be equipped with very complicated system for semi-submersible and auto positioning etc. DNV has big challenges to meet quality objective and production schedule together with HHI because there is no sufficient leading time for engineering and another challenge is to meet owner’s high expectations during approval and production. To create another success story, team work for effective cooperation and customer service mind at every aspect are essential,” says Mr. Kim, Young Ho, Senior Customer Service Manager, DNV.

In 2010, DNV in Korea had secured 103 new building vessels in ship and offshore segment. Contrary to rather conservative forecast on new orders, DNV in Korea had successfully won more contracts than what it has been expected at the start of year 2010.

Dry bulk market keeps losing ground, capesizes suffering

The dry bulk market lost further ground yesterday, as the industry’s benchmark, the Baltic Dry Index was rapidly falling, ending the session down by 2.03% to 1,253 points. As has been the established trend so far this week, the bigger ships have been taking the biggest toll, with Capesizes losing 3.24 percent on the day to just 1,345 points (Baltic Capesize Index), with daily rates still below break-even point, while the Panamaxes have also seen thin demand, with the Baltic Panamax Index retreating yesterday by 3.86% to 1,845 points, which is still way above the capesize segment, in yet another odd signs of the current times. Parker Drilling, operator of the Yastreb land drilling rig for customer Exxon Neftegas Limited (ENL), announced today that it has provided operations services for drilling the world's longest well, Odoptu OP-11, from Sakhalin Island, Russia.
The Odoptu OP-11 well reached a total measured depth of 40,502 feet (7.67 miles) to set a world record for extended-reach drilling (ERD).  The Odoptu OP-11 also set a world record with a horizontal reach of 37,648 feet (7.13 miles). Parker drilled the well for ENL in 60 days.
The Yastreb was designed and built by Parker Drilling for the Sakhalin-1 Consortium, and has been operated by Parker crews since the rig's first well in 2003. In addition to contract drilling and rental tools services, Parker Drilling provides custom engineering and operational solutions for exploration companies' more challenging projects through the Company's Project Management and Engineering Services segment, as employed in the Yastreb.
