Transocean rig off Africa taking on water

Transocean Ltd. spokesman Guy Cantwell told The Associated Press that the rig called Marianas began to take on water near Ghana as it was preparing to move to another location. The rig, currently under contract to Italian oil company Eni, was not drilling at the time. It's a moored semi-submersible rig that lifts its anchors when it prepares to move. It was doing that at the time of the mishap.

ASL Marine Secured Shipbuilding Contracts Worth S$131 Million

The Board of Directors of ASL Marine Holdings Ltd. announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary ASL Shipyard Pte Ltd has secured new shipbuilding contracts worth a total of approximately S$131 million (USD 106.6 million ) for the construction of eleven vessels:

• Two units Emergency Response and Rescue Vessels

• Nine units Anchor Handling Towing/ Supply Vessels

These vessels are expected to be progressively completed between the fourth quarter 2012 to the third quarter 2013.

The two units North Sea standard Emergency Response and Rescue Vessels are repeat orders secured from a customer and will be built at the Group’s Singapore shipyard. The nine units Anchor Handling Towing/ Supply Vessels will be built at the Group’s shipyard in Guangdong province, China.

Revenue from these new shipbuilding contracts will be recognised over the respective contract period in accordance with the Group’s revenue recognition policy based on the percentage of completion method. These contracts are expected to have a positive impact on the net tangible asset and earnings per share of the Group for the financial year ending 30 June 2012.

McDermott Wins Subsea Contract in Australia

McDermott International, Inc. (NYSE:MDR) ("McDermott") announced today the award of a significant subsea contract to its Australian subsidiary for a deepwater offshore engineering and construction project, including structural transportation and installation of subsea infrastructure. The new contract for work offshore Western Australia is included in the company's second quarter 2011 backlog.

"We are extremely pleased to win this significant subsea award in the Asia Pacific segment as it reinforces McDermott's strengthening position in subsea construction projects," said Stephen M. Johnson, McDermott's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. "We are also gratified by our customer's confidence in providing McDermott with the opportunity to demonstrate our growing expertise in reliably delivering complex deepwater projects within a challenging time frame."
The award is for the Macedon Gas Project, situated in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, which will be McDermott's first SURF (Subsea, Umbilicals, Risers and Flowlines) project in Australia. McDermott will carry out detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, transportation and installation of a 77 kilometer, 20-inch diameter pipeline and will install subsea umbilicals and flexible flowlines using vessels from the company's globally diverse fleet in water depths up to 180 meters.

NYK - New Jointly Owned Energy-Efficient LNG Carrier Named

On July 6, NYK Line and Tokyo LNG Tanker Co. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas Co. Ltd., held a naming ceremony for a jointly owned LNG carrier being built at the Sakaide Shipyard of the Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation. At the ceremony, Tsuyoshi Okamoto, the president of Tokyo Gas Co. Ltd., named the vessel Energy Horizon, and his wife cut the guy rope. Yasumi Kudo, the president of NYK, was also in attendance.
The word “horizon” was used in the vessel’s name to reflect the future potential of LNG as an energy resource.

The joint ownership of Energy Horizon is the second between Tokyo LNG Tanker, which owns 10 percent of the vessel, and NYK, which owns the remaining 90 percent. After construction is completed, the ship will be chartered for 20 years and be used for shipments of LNG to Japan from various countries, including Australia.
The vessel is a moss-type LNG carrier, the largest type, and has a tank capacity of 177,000 m3 (cargo capacity: 175,000 m3), which makes it possible to increase transport efficiency. In addition, this is a new energy-saving vessel, the first in the world to be equipped with a reheat turbine plant,1 which reduces fuel consumption by up to 15 percent over conventional steam turbine vessels.
NYK will continue to make every effort to provide stable, environment-friendly LNG transportation.

China's shipbuilding industry output value up 25.4% in Jan-May

The total industrial output value of China's shipbuilding industry increased 25.4% year on year to RMB 302.3 billion in the first five months of this year, according to a report based on the above-scale 1,524 Chinese shipbuilding enterprises and released by the National Development and Reform Commission.
