Sound Oil nets Colle Ginestre exploration license onshore Italy

Sound Oil plc has been awarded a new exploration license onshore Italy, which holds a number of prospects and is located nearby a prolific gas province. 
The Colle Ginestre license is located in Campobasso (Molise) and Chieti (Abruzzo) on the Adriatic coast of central Italy. The new permit lies in the Southern Apennines fairway for shallower gas and deeper oil and adjacent to the Cupello-San Salvo field which has produced over 330 Bscf from the Pliocene play.

New study looks at effects of shipping containers lost at sea

Following up on MBARI’s discovery, sanctuary staff investigated the potential for recovering the other missing 14 containers. However, they soon discovered that it was unlikely that the additional containers would ever be located, and the cost and time involved in recovering them would have been prohibitive. On July 26, 2006, after a significant legal effort, the shipping company agreed to pay the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration $3.25 million to settle claims relating to the lost containers. Money from this settlement is being used to fund the upcoming research dives.

Lukoil's Alekperov Looking for Partners to Invest in U.S. Shale Gas Fields

Exxon's Tillerson blames BP for Gulf oil spill

Exxon Mobil Corp Chief Executive Rex Tillerson said on Wednesday last year's Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster was primarily the fault of BP Plc management.

Cargotec has secured orders worth more than EUR 20 million for MacGregor cranes and hatch covers

Cargotec has confirmed new orders worth more than EUR 20 million to deliver fully electric driven MacGregor cargo handling cranes and design and key components for hatch covers.
The equipment is for eight general cargo vessels to be built at Zhejiang Ouhua Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., China for China Navigation Company Ltd. The ships will be delivered in 2013. The order includes an option for equipment for a further eight ships.
Each of the 31,000 dwt general cargo vessels will be equipped with four fully electrically driven cargo handling cranes with a SWL of 60 tonnes for hook operation and a SWL of 37 tonnes for grab operation. The hatch cover system is based on special customer requirements and comprises of a combination of hatch covers maximising the ship's cargo space and thus demonstrates Cargotec's cargo system design expertise.
"The crane and hatch cover outfits are an integral part of the cargo access and handling ability of the vessels, and the MacGregor cargo handling solution offers an efficient and reliable system for the shipowner," says Per-Erik Nilsson, Cargotec sales and marketing director. "Furthermore, our fully electrically driven cranes are environmentally friendly".

Pirate attack to "Maersk Alabama"

The "Maersk Alabama" was attacked by armed pirates on Mar 8, 2011, between Kenya and Madagascar. It is at least the third time that "Maersk Alabama" has been attacked by pirates.

Armed guards aboard the ship were able to repel the attack. A speedboat with four pirates Tuesday approached the container vessel at high speed. As the speedboat was half a mile from the "Maersk Alabama" the captain gave the armed guards the order to give warning shots, bunt only after the captain gave the order to shoot directly at the pirate ship, the PAG aborted the attack.
It is at least the third time that "Maersk Alabama" has been attacked by pirates.
The last time it happened was in September 2010 when the ship was attacked by five armed pirates.

Dry bulk market showing signs of stronger recovery

The dry bulk market jumped by 3.37% yesterday, with the industry’s benchmark, the Baltic Dry Index (BDI), moving up to 1,472 points, levels not seen in weeks. The recovery was led by the Capesize market, which burst forward by an impressive 6.52%, with the Baltic Capesize Index reaching 1,699 points, finally surpassing the relative earnings of the much smaller in size Supramax ship type (1,512 points). As for the Panamax segment, it still “rules” the dry bulk market with the highest earnings, with the Baltic Panamax Index rising yesterday by 2.29% to 2,095 points.

Hyperdynamics Announces Addition of Curtis Jackson as Vice President-Drilling and Technology

Hyperdynamics Corporation announced today that Curtis Jackson has joined the Company as Vice President-Drilling and Technology, based in Houston.
In this role, Jackson will be responsible for implementing the 2011-12 drilling program, introduction of engineering technology to the Company's exploration efforts and overseeing health, safety and environmental aspects of the operations.  He will report to Mike Palmer, Senior Vice President for Operations.
Jackson spent 32 years predominantly with Amoco and later BP, chiefly in exploration drilling management and also in Health, Safety and Environment roles. Prior to the merger with BP, he was Worldwide Drilling Superintendent for Amoco, where he gained extensive international experience in Europe, Asia and West Africa. Later, he served as exploration manager for BP-Amoco on major deep water projects in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico from 1999 to 2006 and also as director of Health, Safety, Security and Environmental in the Gulf through 2009 prior to leaving the company.
"As Worldwide Drilling Superintendent for Amoco, Curtis compiled an outstanding record of efficiency, economy and safety," said Ray Leonard, President and CEO of Hyperdynamics.  "He brings to Hyperdynamics extensive experience in successfully managing large, complex deep water projects in the U.S. while at BP as well as a thorough understanding of the technical issues that can arise in deepwater.
"The additional experience he brings to our offshore Guinea project in the Health, Safety and Environment area will also be critical as we are beginning to implement the drilling phase of our Guinea program."
Jackson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.
