ATP Announces Strategic Expansion into Offshore Israel

ATP Oil & Gas Corporation is expanding its deepwater operating and infrastructure expertise to offshore Israel. Subject to approval of the Ministry of National Infrastructures (MNI), ATP has signed agreements to acquire five licenses, of which two are pending, in approximately 4,000 feet of water.
T. Paul Bulmahn, Chairman and CEO stated, “The strategic use of our deepwater technical expertise in Israel is one facet of ATP’s global diversification plan. Each license offers an attractive opportunity in the Levantine Basin which is emerging as a prolific area. The recently announced discoveries in offshore Israel totaling approximately 25 Tcf of natural gas have demonstrated a significant catalyst for the offshore hydrocarbons sector. ATP’s ability to enter this area during the early stages of exploration and development is a great testimony to our expertise and commitment to worldwide offshore acquisition and development. This also enhances our future ability to acquire and develop desired proved undeveloped assets in this region. Israel is working towards energy independence and security of its natural resources by encouraging domestic offshore exploration and production.”
ATP will operate all its licenses with working interests ranging from 40% to 50%. Upon the award of the licenses, expected before the end of March 2011, ATP will discuss its estimated capital program projected to be minimal in 2011 and resource potential for the acquisitions.

Ship orders for Japanese yards have more than tripled in January year on year and with gains of 218.5 per cent averaged over 14 consecutive months to 1.5 million gross tons, according to the Japan Ship Exporters Association.

This is an increase over the December's 162.1 per cent increase in orders, reports Newark's Journal of Commerce, adding that in January, Japanese shipbuilders received orders for 28 export ships - 25 bulkers and three oil tankers.

Shipbuilders' Association of Japan chairman Takao Motoyama was cautious despite the good news. "If the strength of the yen continues, Japan will lag behind South Korea and China in terms of price competitiveness," he said.

Tsakos Energy Navigation Announces Two-Year Time Charter Extension for Two Panamax Tankers

Tsakos Energy Navigation Limited yesterday announced two-year time charter extensions for two of its 2009 Korean-built panamax tankers, Chantal and World Harmony. These fixtures will continue with the same charterer, a major South American state affiliated oil entity, at a minimum base rate with open upside for the Company. The renewed charters are now scheduled to expire in the third quarter of 2013. The gross revenues from the extension of these two charters, assuming only the minimum rate, are expected to be approximately $22 million over the corresponding period.
"These extensions are evidence of our tested commercial strategy, of maintaining and developing long-term relationships with established end users," said Mr. Nikolas P. Tsakos, President & CEO of TEN. "For TEN, these flexible rates with open upside and downside protection, together with the capital gains generated from our continuous sale and purchase activity, should assist in narrowing the gap between our stock price and the real value of the Company," Mr. Tsakos concluded.
To date, TEN's pro forma fleet consists of 52 double-hull vessels of 5.4 million dwt (including the Opal Queen) that includes two suezmax tankers currently under construction totalling 316,000 dwt to be delivered in 2011 and two suezmax DP2 tankers for delivery in 2012. TEN's balanced fleet profile is reflected in 25 crude tankers ranging from VLCCs to aframaxes and 26 product carriers ranging from aframaxes to handysize and one LNG carrier.

Suezmax tanker looking good in the coming months says broker

A new report from London-based shipbroker Gibson said that the Suezmax market could experience a firm rise in earnings over the next few weeks. With the tightening supply of VLCC tonnage in the Atlantic and growing resistance by charterers to rocketing VLCC rates, it is the best time for Suezmax owners to join the party. “The recent sharp rise in VLCC freight rates has left the rest of the tanker market trailing in their slipstream. Due to the high number of cargoes coming from the Middle East after the Chinese New Year, the demand for VLCCs has been growing rapidly. Within the last two weeks, TCE earnings on the benchmark VLCC route TD3 (ME Gulf – Japan) have jumped from $9,000/day to $49,000/day. At the same time VLCC tonnage in the West has also thinned significantly, leading to a jump in VLCC earnings on TD4 (WAF-USG) from $24,000/day at the start of February to $46,000/day currently” mentioned the report.
