Hyundai-Vinashin Shipyard switches to shipbuilding

Hyundai-Vinashin Shipyard (HVS) terminated its ship repair business entirely and switched itself to a specialized shipbuilder.HVS delivered M/V Horizon Tacoma, a 1700teu Containership, to USA Horizon Lines of USA, a ship-owning firm, on last Feb. 24.
With this new vessel delivered, HVS has completely changed its operation to specialized shipbuilding system, winding up its ship repair works and conversion services provided to a total of 990 ships including 967 general ships repaired and 23 ships converted and enlarged since its opening in 1999.
HVS plans to switch No. 1 Dock previously used for ship repair and conversion totally to shipbuilding starting with the keel-laying for a 57,000-dwt bulker on upcoming Mar. 15 after it completes the maintenance works for the dock’s gate and its bottom floor.
HVS that has successfully built and delivered two ships in 2009 and five ships in 2010 each is expected to work as a new growth engine of Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, drastically expanding its new building capacity up to 16 ships next year from 11 ships set to be built and delivered this year.
