Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world’s biggest shipbuilder, today won an order to build an ultra-deepwater drillship for Fred Olsen Energy. The contract also includes an option the Norwegian company can exercise to purchase a similar second drillship.
The drillship, measuring 229 m long, 36 m wide and with the water depth capacity up to 3,600 meters (12,000 feet), is due for delivery August 2013. With the drillship-specific fuel-efficient and safety-enhancing design, Hyundai Heavy’s drillships improve stability while operating.
Hyundai Heavy has won the most drillship orders in the world this year with six drillships and options for additional three drillships.
In addition, the Ulsan-based company clinched an order to build four containerships that can carry 5,000 units of standard 20-foot shipping container for Container Carrier Corp. This contract also includes an option exercisable by the Greece-based company to order four same class containerships. Including this order, Hyundai Heavy has won orders for 22 containerships this year.
By winning 34 ships, or USD 9.2 billion as of April, Hyundai Heavy achieved 46% of new orders target of USD 19.8 billion in shipbuilding, offshore and plant business.
