How are wrecked ships salved?



Accidents do happen, and ships are occasionally wrecked on rocks, sandbanks or are perhaps washed up on a lee shore, possibly after the anchor chain had parted or dragged in a storm. Vessels sometimes collide, or catch fire. It then becomes the job of professional salvors to make the best of a bad situation and save the ship, once its crew are in a place of safety. Salvage is a highly specialised and fascinating business employing all manner of different skills, from diving and the ability to undertake underwater repairs, welding and repairing, and even emptying a damaged or sunken ship of the pollutants in cargo or bunker tanks.
