British authorities say hijackings cost $12bn each year




BRITAIN is devoting an extra $9 million to fight piracy on the Indian Ocean amid warnings that hijacking is increasing beyond control.
Piracy off Somalia has reached new levels: 150 vessels have been hijacked in the past two years and 500 hostages are being held.
