Shipbuilding project in West Bengal hit by political uncertainty



The prevailing political turmoil in West Bengal has put a shipbuilding project proposed by Bharati Shipyard Ltd at Geonkhali in East Midnapore under a cloud. The Rs 2,000 crore project, a 50:50 joint venture between Bharati Shipyard of Mumbai and the Apeejay Surrendra Group of Kolkata, which was due to take off this year, has now been postponed by at least six months. Although the company officially cites recession in the shipbuilding industry as the reason for the postponement, the real culprit is believed to be the volatile political environment in the state.
