Siemens adopts power strategy aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from Barents Sea oil platform
Siemens Energy will supply power to the Goliat floating offshore platform in the Barents Sea north of Norway via a 106 kilometre long sub-sea cable, a strategy it says will reduce CO2 emissions from the oil and gas operation by 50 percent.
Typically, power for oil and gas platforms is generated by onboard gas turbines and generators.
By contrast, Siemens will supply a turnkey shore side power supply system to the Stavanger (Norway)-based Eni Norge. It will consist of a Hyggevatn substation located in Hammerfest in northern Norway, 132-kV overhead transmission lines, buried cable and a reactive-power compensation system.
The shore side power supply to the platform is scheduled to come on line in 2012; the start of production in the Goliat field is planned for late 2013, the company said.
